Internal Diameter Explained... So, what's the big difference between Internal and External Diameter? Circular body jewelry is measured by gauge and internal diameter - there are a couple of reasons for this -- the first being that it is critical to certain piercings - like nipples - where you need to make sure there is enough room for you! The picture on the right illustrates the area that is measured on a 12g tusk for internal diameter. Something to keep in mind when ordering is the overall size of the piece you are ordering. For instance, a 11mm internal diameter 12g tusk has an external diameter of approximately 15mm (about 5/8 inches) |
